Vegas

August 7, 2009

Off to Vegas this weekend! I was going to do the E.T Full Moon Midnight Marathon on Saturday night, but opted out at the very last minute. It was going to take another 2 hours from Vegas just to drive to Area 51. It was also going to be a lot of waiting around for B, who was also going to ride the bus up with me to the race start, then wait around until the half marathon to finish, then we would have to wait some more before the first bus goes back to Vegas. We probably wouldn’t have gotten back until 5am or so, leaving back home to L.A the next morning. It sounded like such a fun and unusual race at the time I signed up, but the logistics just didn’t work out. I’m sad I won’t be able to do it, but also a little relieved I will have that extra time spent in Vegas. At least I can still attend the Expo tomorrow afternoon and pick up my shirt! So all is not completely lost.

Also, another disappointment was after I signed up for the Disney 5K and Goofy Challenge, I realized there were no flights leaving L.A to Orlando Thursday night. The times are more limited because my dad is a special member of United mileage and was able to score us free plane tickets. The only time he had was leaving at 10pm and arriving at 6am, with the race starting at 7am. Lol, yeah definitely not making that one. So no 5K, but B has agreed to do a 5K or 10K with me before the year is over. I was looking at the Santa Monica 5000 or a Playa Del Rey run in October. Oh well, I still plan on running  3 miles Friday before the weekend events just to keep my legs fresh. I still can’t believe my fastest half marathon time (1:45) was the day after I ran a 20 mile training run with my running group. What?! I haven’t done anything like that since, and well, I haven’t beaten that PR either, so maybe there is some science to whether that method works?

Most people think of Vegas for gambling and clubs, but actually, I really enjoy going there for everything outside of the Strip. We are going hiking at Red Rock Canyon, boating and feeding the crazy fishes in Lake Mead and checking out the Hoover Dam, oh yeah, and a Criss Angel Cirque du Soleil show thrown in there. Of course there are going to be lots of good eats which I’ll share when I come back. I can’t wait to try Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill restaurant at Caesar’s Palace! I have heard so many good things about this restaurant in NY and I love Bobby’s cooking. The menu looks amazing! I have never seen anything like it. I wish we had a huge group going so I could eat a little bit of everything, but between B and I, we will probably only get to taste a couple dishes before someone has to roll us out. Check out the menu. What would you order?

If anyone watches Top Chef Masters, one of the finalist is Hubert and he owns this French restaurant in Vegas called Fleurde Lys

Apparently they serve a$5000 burger there! Why would any sane person spend that much on a burger?! “Sold at Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay, “the foie gras and black truffle-stuffed Kobe burger is served on a brioche truffle bun and garnished with Chef Keller’s special sauce, which also has truffles. Accompanying this burger is a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1995.” Would you buy this if $5000 dropped out of the sky?

I watched Top Chef last night and can’t believe people actually buy that burger!

I LOVE doing things off the strip! The last time I went to Vegas, I went to Valley of Fire. What an amazing hike 🙂

I would never pay that much $$ for a burger! I’d rather take 5 trips to Vegas instead.

I don’t think I would buy it, but I might beg someone for a bite.
