Basic Tomato Sauce

Making my own homemade tomato sauce is one of those things that you just can’t get from a jar. Sure, Preggo is pretty good, but you don’t need a gazillion ingredients to make a simple and flavorful sauce. Also, it cuts down on the sodium count considerably, not to mention it’s a lot cheaper. I like to use this basic tomato sauce in a lot of my dishes, from pastas to sandwiches, you really can find a way to use this in any recipe. Adjust seasonings to your taste preference. I like mine with some basil and oregano, but you can also throw in whatever herbs you have on hand.

Basic Tomato Sauce

  • 1 can diced or whole tomatoes
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 small can tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1.5 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • A couple basil leaves, finely chopped


1. In a saucepan, heat olive oil, garlic and red pepper flakes first. Then toss the diced tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and all the seasonings. Season with salt and pepper.
