Spicy Turkey Sloppy Joes

October 27, 2010

Sloppy joes are really a quintessential kid food. Getting your hands dirty while eating this messy sandwich was the best part. Sloppy joes are traditionally made with ground beef with minced onions and ketchup mixed in. Instead, this recipe uses lean ground turkey, chopped bell pepper and diced tomato for a lighter version of this classic. You can add more veggies into the mix, like mushrooms, celery and carrots. The creaminess of the bleu cheese really takes this sandwich up a notch. It pairs perfectly with the browned turkey and all the complementary spices. If you like yours spicier, add more hot sauce or chili powder. Serve it on your favorite whole wheat bun and enjoy your sandwich. Be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand!

The trick to this recipe is to brown the meat well, on high heat. Don’t crowd the pan, work in batches, and don’t stir the meat until it is well browned on one side. It helps to use a large cast iron pan.

Nice!! You’ve just brought back so many childhood memories for me. I love it. I also love that you used ground turkey.
